In the first half year, the country met equal electricity supply and demand. In June, under micro-stimulus policies and other factors, the growth rate of social power consumption recovered for two consecutive months. Growth in light and heavy industries was relatively balanced. Average daily power consumption in manufacturing industry increased largely than last month and the four high energy-consuming industries consumed significantly more electricity than the previous year. Compared to the same period last year, growth rate of power in tertiary industry and urban/suburban residents slowed down slightly. Hydropower generating capacity, led by Yunnan and Sichuan, kept growing; thermal power production improved slightly, but still nine provinces presented negative growth; wind power generating capacity showed negative growth comparing to the same period of last year. In the first half year, installed capacity grew rapidly but thedemand increased slow, which caused less equipment utilization hours, especially for the wind power equipment. Grid investment held the line with last year but power investment declined substantially. New capital construction slightly increased. By the end of June and early July, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations have been put into use completely, causing a significant reduction on hydropower construction scale. In June, the inter-provincial power transmission and the power from West China to East China of South Power Grid grew rapidly, but the transmistted capacity of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station still went down for two consecutive months.

First, the growth of social power consumption recovered for two consecutive months. Most provinces' power consumption in North and Northeast China increased slightly.

In the first half year, total electricity consumption was 2627.6TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 5.3% and a rising growth rate of 0.2 percentage points.

As for different industries, in the first half year, the primary industry's power consumption was 43.5TWh, with a year-on-year decrease of 4.6%, accounting for 1.7% of total social power consumption; secondary industry's power consumption was 1932.5TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 5.1% and a rising growth rate of 0.2 percentage points, accounting for 73.5% and 70.6% of total social power consumption and growth respetctively; tertiary industry's power consumption was 313.8TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 6.9% and a falling growth rate of 2.4 percentage points, accounting for 11.9% and 15.2% of total social consumption and growth respectively; rural and urban residential power consumption was 337.8TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 6.6% and a rising growth rate of 2.7 percentage points, accounting for 12.9% and 15.8% of total social power consumption and growth respectively.

As for different regions, the growth rate of 16 provinces was higher than the national average (5.3%). Among them, Xinjiang (19.6%) and Chongqing (10.0 %) were over 10%. Except Inner Mongolia (9.6%), Shandong (4.0%) and Liaoning (2.7%), the growth rate of the other 6 provinces in North and Northeast China were lower than 2%, accounting for 75% of the total 8 slow-growing provinces. The lowest three were Gansu (0.2%), Heilongjiang (0.9%) and Jilin (1.2%).

In June, total social power consumption was 463.9TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 5.9% and a rising growth rate of 0.6 percentage points than last month. The growth rate recovered for two consecutive months. As for different industries, in June, primary industry’s power consumption was 9.8TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 0.3%; secondary industry’s power consumption was 348.2TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 5.2%, accounting for 67.4% of total social consumption growth; tertiary industry’s power consumption was 54.7TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 9.0% and a falling growth rate of 1.5 percentage points, accounting for 17.6% of total social consumption growth; rural and urban residential power consumption was 51.1TWh, with a year-on-year increase of 8.1% and a falling growth rate of 1.3 percentage points, accounting for 14.8% of total social consumption growth.

As for regions, in June, 13 provinces’ consumption growth rates were higher than the national average (5.9%). Among them, Xinjiang (14.3%), Hainan (13.6%), Guizhou (12.3%), Beijing (11.3%) and Inner Mongolia (10.7%) were over 10%. Hunan (-2.8%) and Shanghai (-0.4%) were the only two provinces presenting negative growth.
